We say “don’t care what others think” but that’s certainly not the case in, say, a job interview, where first impressions are important. But that is the case when evaluating what random strangers will think of our car (Probably 99% of them don’t even think anything anyway). So there has to be some place to draw the line.

I think there are people who say “I don’t care what other people think” and there there are others who actually don’t care what other people think. Or rather, don’t care what MOST people think. It seems like the world is a better place when everyone is themselves and just does their own thing. Adds variety and uniqueness where otherwise we would all be a robot army with all of the same values, interests, and aspirations.

Yeah, ‘don’t care what other people think, unless it’s important to care about what other people think in that particular situation' is probably a lot more accurate and useful, but it's a lot less pithy...

Unless “doing your thing” is murdering children.

Because of course I have to play devil’s advocate.

Yeah, there has to be some place to draw the line. Pitch me some scenarios? (Choose wisely to avoid an Oppo shitstorm though—yes I just drew a line)

Yeah I was afraid of an oppo war. Here goes:

Job interview

Driving away slowly from a car show when everyone screams BURNOUT

Hittin up the opposite gender

Parental advice

Buying a shirt

Rolling a watermelon down the street

I judge my caring based on how it will affect me, whether monetarily, romantically, or potential future opportunities. Why would I care about much else? A rational person doesn’t spend all their time fretting about everything, because in the grand scheme of things, we get about 70-80 years and nothing matters that much to waste your time caring that much.

Its not philosophy unless someone mentions how they could be murdering children. I enjoy being the devil's advocate in the most absurd as possible ways.

Care, definitely. I need dat mony

Don’t give half a shit. Though tbh, I probably would roll on hard of my own free will, but I’m not going to do a burnout for a bunch of random strangers just because they asked me to.

Don’t care. It either works or it don’t. I’m not going to go out of my way to be anything but myself, just trouble down the road. If I end up being the last single guy on the planet, so be it.

I’ll a) try not to care, but I won’t succeed very well. b) Care very much and value the advice highly.

For the aforementioned job interview and similar situations? Yes. For anything else? I’m not going to go out of my way to look bad, but it’s a shirt, this is me, and what does it change? Jack sh*t. Buy the shirt.

Difficult one... in the spirit of “do unto others”, I have a vehicle with the correct attributes to avoid damage. I’d probably try to hit it. I don’t care if it’s rolled, therefore I don’t really care if I roll one. If I had something low and fragile it might be different.

I definitely care what other think of me, but in a contradictory fashion, only in certain situations. My car is excellent because of the two reactions it causes. People either understand how much fun I am having, or are disgusted by me bringing my rusted junk on the road. To those people, I love rubbing a heaping dose of life into their faces. Some people choose to be miserable all the time, so fuck em. I feel like a celebrity with all the stares I get. Probably wouldn’t otherwise unless I bought some stupid expensive car.

I love philosophy.

I’d say no, the argument doesn’t change. In fact it should strengthen the reason of why we shouldn’t care what other think in an interview scenario, because if what you’re trying to do is suck up they’ll like someone who isn’t really you.

In my opinion: In an interview they should like what you BRING to the table, your personal knowledge, troubleshooting/communication skills, what you’ve contributed to previous companies, etc. Not how you address them, or how much you smile, necessarily. If the job is the right fit, they’ll see your natural enthusiasm, which presents itself when discussing something you like or are interested in. Anything else you try to portray, is a little less you and more what they want you to be. Sort of like when you first meet a girl/boy and we try all kinds of different things to see what they like, at the end we might seem to be someone we’re not - which we all know ends super well /sarcarsm.

That might not be a popular opinion, but I’ve always said quality over quantity, and that applies to friends, work relations or anything. Sure that means I only have a few friends I call friends, and I mean 2 or 3 tops. But that also means we can quite literally never worry about being ourselves to any extent, and be able to ask for actual feedback on issues. :D Not sure if that helps.. lol
